Getting a new pet is very exciting! But it can also be a very stressful time, full of questions. What should I be feeding him, and how often? How do I stop her weeing on the carpet every time we come in? He keeps chewing my furniture or fingers or scratching my new sofa! We can help you with all of these problems- our nurses have years of experience in dealing with all of those new pet problems, and they are always keen to see any cute new additions!

Prior to purchase: We would generally recommend you obtain a puppy or kitten that has been bred in a private home or from a recognized rescue centre. It is important you visit them in their own home prior to purchase and, make sure you see the mother. If the place seems unhygienic or the kitten, puppy or mother seems in anyway unhealthy, it may be best not to take them. Particular things to looks for are animals that look underweight, sticky discharge form the eyes or nose, animals soiled with faeces, animals that are very quiet or unresponsive. If you are worried about the welfare of the animals and leaving them in poor conditions, you can always contact the RSPCA or Local Council. On our links page you will find the Cariad website which has further information about buying puppies, how to avoid farmed puppies and what to do if you are worried about what you find.
Once Home: Unless your pet has any obvious health problems or you have other specific concerns, we would recommend letting your new arrival settle in at home for a few days before visiting the vets. This way you will know if the animals are healthy and eating and if they have any symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, vomiting or diarrhoea.
Puppies can have their first vaccination from 8 weeks old and kittens from 9 weeks. This is when they will get a full health check with one of our very experienced vets. It is essential they are vaccinated and have regular boosters to prevent them getting potentially lethal diseases.
We will weigh your pets and advise you on the best and safest worming and flea treatments.
We will also be able to advise you on the best ways to train your pet and develop good behaviour.
